Beulah Blackmore, Jean Petit ‘39 and Carmen Sorbello ‘40 backstage at the 1938 installment of “Costumes of Many Lands.” Like many other white appearing students, Petit is shown in black or brownface, a practice that became popular in the late nineteenth century and drew heavily from racist stereotypes.
