Bandung Artist Collection
This project presents the work of two modern Indonesian artists, Ahmad Sadali (1924-1987, Garut, Indonesia) and Haryadi Suadi (1938-2016), spanning from the 1960s to the 2000s. This project is part of a larger initiative examining the relationship between religion and modernity, particularly between Islam and modern art. Sadali and Haryadi's paintings, prints, and glass paintings demonstrate the artists' critical negotiation with global modernism. Their works also reflect their interpretation and experience of Islam and Muslim identity in Indonesia. For more information about this collection, please see here for more details.
Haryadi Suadi (1939-2016, Cirebon, West Java, Indonesia) - This collection documents more than 200 works produced by Haryadi Suadi from the 1960s through 2014, consisting of oil paintings, glass paintings, and prints. Prints dominate Haryadi's collection due to his educational background as a printmaker at the newly established printmaking studio at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), where he specialized primarily in woodblock printing techniques.
Ahmad Sadali (1924-1987, Garut, Indonesia) - The works included in this project are photographic reproductions created for Ahmad Sadali's retrospective exhibition at the National Gallery of Indonesia in 2014. The collection consists of oil paintings on canvas and works on paper created from the 1950s until 1987, the year of his death. Ahmad Sadali is widely recognized as the 'Father of Abstract Art' in Indonesia.
