Beatrice Hunter

Biography:

When Beatrice Hunter came to Cornell in 1918 as an instructor in clothing, she brought with her expertise and training in the scientific study of clothing as well as public school experience. Hunter graduated from Morris High School in New York City in 1906 and then studied at the New York Training School for Teachers. From 1908 to 1913, she taught in the city schools. By 1913, she had earned two bachelor's degrees, the first one in the science of domestic arts and the second in education from Teachers College, Columbia University. From 1914 to 1919 she continued her studies in clothing and design at the University of Chicago, where she also taught costume design. At Cornell, Hunter specialized in clothing, costume design, and fine arts. Her professional skills prepared her to teach both "Principles and Practice in Clothing Construction and Design" and "Special Methods in Elementary School Subjects." In 1927, she became a full professor, but she resigned a year later.
