Posters Explaining the Cocktail Lounge renovation
.....and what to do while it is closed
Why is the Cocktail Lounge Closed? As part of our efforts to improve library spaces, the Cocktail Lounge (also known as the Uris Addition) is closed for a much-needed makeover! Opened in 1982, it will soon feature a more contemporary look, cozier and more versatile furniture, and study areas better-equipped for both individual and group work. With increased accessibility, it will also become fully ADA compliant.
When will the Cocktail Lounge reopen? We anticipate the Cocktail Lounge reopening in mid-to-late May 2019.
What will the space look like when it is completed? The overall structure will be the same, but the furnishings, equipment, and study areas will be remodeled. The changes include: • A variety of task-oriented and cozy seating options, including more lounge-like furniture and tables and chairs of different heights • Seating areas designed to maximize views of Libe Slope • Reservable study rooms with improved task furniture, ready for plug-and-play group work (i.e., easy connections for laptops) • Restrooms upgraded to meet ADA access standards, and an all-gender restroom added • More electrical outlets • New carpeting and interior lighting • A vending area with hot beverages
First time since 1982, the south entrance facing Willard Straight Hall will be open! You will need your Cornell ID to enter. The path outside will be well-lit and regraded for better accessibility, landscaping will be improved, and an in-ground heating system will mitigate ice and snow accumulation
On the exterior, the plaza
leading to the south
entrance will be regraded
to allow ADA access to the
space. Landscaping will be
improved, additional
lighting will be added, and
the area leading to the
entrance will be equipped
with an in-ground heat
system to help mitigate ice
and snow accumulating
outside the entrance.
Will Uris still be open 24 hours/5 days a week?
Yes, the remainder of Uris will be open during regular hours, and the lower levels (CLS, Tower Lab, B05 classroom, Kirby, Austen, and Fiske) will be open overnight, as scheduled. The
Cocktail Lounge was my favorite place to study. Where can I go now?
There are many places to study in Olin and Uris
(see https://olinuris.library.cornell.edu/spaces),
as well as in other libraries on campus
(see https://www.library.cornell.edu/libraries).
How did you choose the furniture?
You chose the furniture! Those who were here in Spring 2018 may remember the array of test furniture that was in place for several weeks. We gave those who use the Cocktail Lounge a chance to try the furniture and to share their responses via large comment sheets posted on the walls. In addition, two librarians interviewed a number of students to learn more about what furniture and features were most desirable. The responses on the comments sheets and to the interviews were critical in deciding which furniture to purchase.
