The Blue Hen of Delaware

Fighting cocks descended from an unusually colored “blue” game hen were kept by troops from Kent County, Delaware, during the American Revolution. The Delaware regiment and its birds were both renowned for bravery; the regiment became known as the Blue Hen’s Chickens. The Blue Hen is the mascot of the University of Delaware, and the official state bird.
