With their tireless industry, hierarchical communities and creation of two valued commodities, honey and beeswax, the lives of honeybees have frequently been the subject of romance and metaphor. This romantic, rather than strictly practical, interpretation can be seen in the work of artists in books from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
