Main Content

This online exhibition was developed in 1999 and first published in 2000 by Cornell University Library’s Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections. It was funded by the Cornell Institute for Digital Collections (CIDC). Founded in 1997, CIDC was one of the University’s earliest initiatives aimed at making cultural and scientific materials universally available via the World Wide Web. CIDC worked in partnership with John Anzalone, a professor of French at Skidmore College, to develop the site’s content, using resources held by Cornell’s Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections. The Fantastic in Art and Fiction was one of Cornell University's first attempts at an “online only” exhibition. Cornell University Library archived the original version of the online exhibition in 2024 to preserve its earlier design. This version maintains access to the original images and text within an updated website.
