Geographical Recreation or A Voyage Around the Habitable Globe

Conceived in a time of British imperial expansion, this game has as its central image a regal white figure surrounded by ethnic figures in obedient poses–a clear expression of England’s colonial agenda. Despite the original Euro-centric focus of its depiction of other cultures, it has taken on a new life in contemporary education. Teachers in California have used it as a model to promote the study of multiculturalism and to help their students explore their own cultures by creating their own versions of the game.
