Shephard's Watercolors

Benjamin Shephard, a cooper aboard HMS Challenger, captured the first half of the voyage in a sketch book of watercolors. His paintings give a glimpse of Challenger's voyage from the perspective of an average crewman, depicting not only remarkable events like storms off Florida and reaching the antarctic ice but also ordinary days leaving port or holding station for the ship to perform its survey work.
