A Thank You to the Donors

Bookplate, "The Gift of Isabel Zucker class '26"

The Language of Flowers Collection at Mann Library was founded on the generosity of Isabel Zucker ’26, who donated the vast majority of the volumes that make the collection so special and distinctive. Isabel was a horticulture major during her time at Cornell, and published a popular book, Flowering Shrubs, in 1966, which was republished in new and expanded editions as Flowering Shrubs and Small Trees in 1990 and 1995. Her interest in plants and botany also led her to collect many fascinating books on floriography dating from the late 18th century to the 1960s. After Isabel’s death, her daughter Judith Zucker Clark ’53 – the first state park naturalist in Michigan – continued to support the collection through timely gifts and consultations. We are grateful to them for all they have given to our community and the preservation of these rare and important books. The Language of Flowers Collection can be viewed by appointment at Mann Library or online through Cornell Library Digital Collections.

The generosity of the Zucker family is also on display in the Zucker Shrub Garden at Cornell Botanic Gardens, an important piece of Cornell’s horticultural collections.
