INSPIRATION

Located in the FSAD lobby area.

Birds are an endless source of inspiration for fashion and textile designers. How do designers translate this inspiration into creative work? In this process of translation—that is, the abstraction and depiction of the bird—are we still able to determine the species? This section of the exhibition is organized according to different textile design techniques used to render birds onto fabrics. We explore how designers render inspiration through printing, resist dyeing techniques, structural textile design, and embroidery. We have also speculated about what birds are represented in each ensemble, taking into consideration visual information as well as context clues, such as region, time period, and other cultural and social factors associated with the garment.
